Rebecca serves as Oakland’s sole at large council representative - representing the entire City.  In November of 2008 she was elected as the youngest and first openly lesbian Oakland City Councilmember.  Rebecca served Oakland residents as their AC Transit representative on the AC Transit Board of Directors from 2002 to 2008.  During this time she helped bring AC Transit its first hydrogen fuel-cell buses and continued her commitment to improving active transportation for Oaklanders – by working to improve biking, walking, and public transit opportunities.

As Oakland’s at large Councilmember, Rebecca is taking a leading role in establishing coherent and holistic approaches to transportation and land use policy that helps move Oakland forward.  In addition to her strong commitment to improving all modes of transit, Rebecca places high priority on economic opportunity for Oakland - from job creation to retail attraction and home buyer assistance.

Rebecca has been involved in community and public service since moving from Massachusetts, where she attended university and graduate school, to Oakland to attend law school.  She has experience working as a California State Legislative Assistant, for the Oakland City Attorney’s Office, TransForm (formerly Transportation and Land Use Coalition), and many other law firms and community based organizations.

Rebecca has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.  She also has a Master of Arts in Urban & Environmental Policy from Tufts University in Medford, MA and a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School in Palo Alto, CA.  Originally from Canada, Rebecca has proudly called Oakland home for the past two decades.
